Golf Fairways
Perfect play on perfect grasses
Low input on the fairway will be a future demand!
The fairways cover large parts of the golf course but compared to the greens they get little attention. However, growing focus on water reserves and the use of pesticides and fertilizers make it increasingly important to choose the right grasses and mixtures for the fairways.
Choice of species
A normal cutting height on fairways is around 2,5 cm. For fine fescues this is not a problem but for perennial ryegrasses and Poa pratensis it is important to choose the right varieties in order to keep a dense and weed free grass cover.
Fine fescues
Trichophylla and commutata types of red fescue are the most dense and low growing red fescues. They tolerate close mowing very well. Trichophylla types have extremely good drought tolerance and maintain a very good summer appearance making it possible to save water for irrigation. Commutata types are among the most winterhardy turf grasses to be found and are suitable for the low maintenance courses.
Fine fescues can be combined with Agrostis tenuis (Browntop) if a very dense and low growing fairway is desired.
Poa pratensis
A new variety of Poa pratensis has been selected for fine leaves and dense growth. It is persistant and very wear tolerant with strong rhizomes and erect leafy shoots, which can be cleanly cut. With its rhizomatous growth, Poa pratensis will repair holes (divots) in the fairway easily and help keep it weed-free.
Perennial ryegrass
Is among the most wear tolerant of species and is suitable for golf courses with many players e.g. Pay & Play courses. It regenerates quickly by setting new leaves and is a robust grass that withstands most diseases very well. It is important to choose varieties with very fine leaves and low growth in order to withstand close mowing.
